Bet on the Spiral Stakes
Since the inaugural running in 1972, the Turfway Spiral Stakes has undergone quite a few changes. Despite going through several name changes, first to the Jim Beam Stakes in 1982 then to the Lane’s End in 2002 and ultimately back to the Spiral in 2013 with the Horseshoe Casino as a title sponsor, the race has remained an important step to the Kentucky Derby. Originally run at a mile, it is now contested at a mile and an eighth over Turfway’s Polytrack, a synthetic surface and is held the third weekend in March.

2016 Spiral Stakes Contenders
The Spiral Stakes (G3) drew a wide open field for the 2015 renewal. Run over Turfway Park’s synthetic main track, the race attracted a mix of three-year-olds hoping to earn Kentucky Derby qualifying points as well as turf and synthetic specialists. Metaboss went to the gate as the favorite.
It was Dubai Sky, overlooked at odds of 7-1 despite a three-race win streak, who stalked the pace under jockey Jose Lezcano and launched a bold bid at the top of the stretch to seize the lead from Conquest Typhoon, Canada’s reigning champion juvenile. He drew off comfortably to win by 2 ¼ lengths. The favorite, Metaboss, was sixth. Both Dubai Sky and Metaboss went to the sidelines after the race with injuries.

Did you know
The Turfway Spiral was a Grade 2 race from 1973 through 2010. It was demoted to a Grade 3 in 2011. It does, however, offer a lucrative purse of $550,000 and because of that often attracts a full field of contenders. In 2011, Animal Kingdom used the Spiral Stakes as a catapult to an upset victory in the Kentucky Derby, furthering the chances of the race regaining Grade 2 status.
Over the history of the race, no single jockey has been more dominant than Hall of Fame rider Pat Day. He earned his first victory in the race in 1984 aboard At the Threshold and went on to win four more editions of the race, most notably with eventual Preakness winner Summer Squall in 1990 and Kentucky Derby winner Lil E. Tee in 1992.
While the Spiral typically draws a field of colts and geldings, there has been one filly who has stood out in the history of the race. Serena’s Song, D. Wayne Lukas’s superstar, took on males for the first time in the Spiral, then the Jim Beam. She won handily as the heavy favorite and would go on to beat the boys again in the Haskill Invitational (G1) later that summer.
