Since 1982, Ellis Park Race Course, located in Henderson, Kentucky, has hosted the Gardenia Stakes, which is an event that typically takes place every year in August. This competition is set up for fillies and mares three years and older, who run on the traditional dirt course. The race was contested under a new name for the first time in 2015 – the Groupie Doll Stakes (G3). The race was renamed in honor of the two-time Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (G1) champion, who won the Gardenia in 2011.The distance of this race changed from 1 1/8 mile to 1 mile in 2005 and the purse has changed over the past decade from $200,000 to $150,000, settling on its current overall winnings of $100,000 in 2009.

2016 Groupie Doll Stakes Contenders
The 2015 Groupie Doll drew a packed field of twelve with four other fillies waiting in the wings listed as also-eligible. Call Pat went to post as the favorite at just under 4-1 odds in search of her first graded stakes victory. Content to rate in last for the early part of the race, she came flying late under a well-timed ride by Joe Rocco, Jr. to collar the front-running longshot Fioretti and win by half a length. Fioretti held on for second and Pistolpackinpenny, also at double-digit odds, rounded out the trifecta in third.
Call Pat was fourth in the Beldame Stakes (G1) in her next start.

The fastest time posted for the one mile version of the Gardenia Stakes is 1:34.97, achieved by Devious Intent in 2013. At the age of six, Dream of Summer became the oldest horse to win in 2005, the first year these stakes were run as a one mile competition. In 2011, Groupie Doll became the first three-year-old to win since 1985. The majority of winners for the Gardenia Stakes are four years of age, with 21 winners in 32 races. Run Tulle Run finished top three in the first three editions of this competition, finishing third in 1982 and 1983 before improving to second in 1984.
