$100,000 La Brea Stakes Draws 6
The $100,000 Las Flores Stakes March 20 at Santa Anita features a compact field of six set to travel six furlongs on the dirt in a race where little separates the top contenders.
8/5 morning line favorite Fantastic Style has done little wrong in her six-race career, winning four times to go with a runner-up finish and one third-place effort. The Bob Baffert trainee hasn't raced, however, since winning the Grade 2 Great Lady M Stakes July 11 at Los Alamitos. While Baffert excels with horses returning from lenghty layoffs, Fantastic Style will have her work cut out for her against a tough field. Jockey Rafael Bejarano will be aboard breaking from post 3.
Sensitively tries stakes foes
Sensitively (5/2) will break just to the inside of the favorite with Tyler Baze taking the call for trainer Phil D'Amato. The lightly-raced four year-old daughter of Street Sense has won 2 of 5 starts, including an impressive last-out tally against allowance company February 13 at Santa Anita. The Las Flores represents Sensitively's first try against stakes company, but she fits based on speed figures and has proven her affinity for the Santa Anita dirt where she's won 2 of 3 starts.
Ben's Duchess finds softer spot
Ben's Duchess (3/1) is another logical win candidate. Representing the always-dangerous John Saddler barn, Ben's Duchess won the Grade 3 L.A. Woman Stakes October 4 at Santa Anita before finishing fourth in the Grade 1 La Brea December 26. In her four year-old debut, Ben's Duchess finished a disappointing ninth in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes January 23. The daughter of Munnings has beeen freshened since the poor effort and should appreciate the class relief.
