Brody's Cause Makes Sophomore Debut in $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby
On Saturday at Tampa Bay Downs, the featured race is the $350,000 Tampa Bay Derby. With points on the line towards a spot in the Kentucky Derby (G1), the Grade 2 event will be held at a mile and a sixteenth and has drawn a field of ten colts and geldings.
Brody’s Cause tops the competitive field as the morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 for trainer Dale Romans. He was last seen finishing fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) and has been training steadily. Corey Lanerie will be aboard and they will break from post position eight.
Destin trying for second straight graded stakes win
Second choice at morning line odds of 9-2 is Destin, one of two horses in the race for trainer Todd Pletcher. A gray son of Giant’s Causeway, he was purchased for $400,000 as a yearling and is a full brother to graded stakes winner Creative Cause. He was last seen winning the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) to earn his first stakes victory and second win of his career. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post position seven.
Rafting looking for breakthrough victory
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Rafting for trainer Graham Motion. A chestnut son of Tapit, he is a homebred for Wertheimer and Frere and has been on the board in four of his five starts. He will be trying to earn the first graded stakes victory of his career and is coming out of a runner-up effort behind Destin in the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3). Edgar Prado will be aboard and they will break from post position two.
