Giant's Causeway Draws Big Field in Great Betting Race
With an overflow field of 14 set to contest the $100,000 Giant’s Causeway April 16 at Keeneland, the five and a half furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares serves as nice side dish to the main course of graded stakes action on the card.
3/1 morning line favorite Miss Matzoball has gotten really good in her last two starts - both winning efforts in five furlong turf sprints at Gulfstream. In her last start, the Roy Lerman trainee emerged from a $25,000 optional claimer to win the first stakes race of her career while posting an exemplary 98 Beyer Speed Figure. If able to repeat that peformance, the five year-old mare could easily find herself a repeat stakes winner. Jockey Javier Castellano, who is Miss Matzoball's primary jockey, gets back in the irons after missing her last start.
Miss Ella gets back on grass
Miss Ella (6/1) is an intriguing item for trainer Graham Motion while making her first start since October. In her lone start on grass, Miss Ella finished second in an ungraded stakes race at Saratoga last summer, posting a 95 Beyer Figure while chasing the highly regarded Lady Shipman. The four year-old daughter of Exchange Rate posted a blistering workout April 9 at Palm Meadows and gets a confident nod from Motion who connects at a 20% clip with his runners returning from layoffs of greater than 180 days. Expect this filly to take sharp betting action.
Speedster can control fractions
Jewel of a Cat (7/2) ran third behind Miss Matzoball in her last start and was compromised when carried out in the stretch. She can control the early pace with her natural gate speed and figures to take this field well into the stretch, making her another logical contender.
