Keeneland Kicks Off Spring Meet with $100,000 Transylvania Stakes
Friday is opening day at Keeneland and the featured race is the $100,000 Transylvania Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds, the Grade 3 is scheduled to be run at one mile on the turf and has drawn a field of nine colts.
Converge has been installed as the morning line favorite at odds of 5-2 and is one of two colts in the race for trainer Chad Brown. A bay son of Sidney’s Candy, he was purchased for $240,000 as a yearling and has won two of his three starts. He stepped up to graded stakes competition successfully last time out with a win in the Palm Beach Stakes (G3) at Gulfstream Park and has been training steadily since then. Javier Castellano will be aboard and they will break from post position seven.
Stakes debut for well-bred Inspector Lynley
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Inspector Lynley for trainer Claude McGaughey, III. Bred and owned in partnership by Stuart Janney, III and Phipps Stables, the bay son of Lemon Drop Kid has been on the board in three of his four starts and is trying to earn his second victory. He is stepping up in class after breaking his maiden last time out following two runner-up efforts. Florent Geroux will be in the irons and they will break from the rail.
Catapult returining off six-month layoff
Also in the field at morning line odds of 3-1 is the other horse from the Chad Brown barn, Catapult. A dark bay son of Kitten’s Joy, he went for $350,000 as a yearling and will be making his first start since breaking his maiden in his debut at Belmont Park in October. He defeated ten rivals that day by 1 ¼ lengths despite encountering traffic. He has been training steadily for his sophomore debut and will break from post position eight under Julian Leparoux.
