Free Kentucky Derby Expert Picks
The Kentucky Derby and its sister race, the Kentucky Oaks, take place at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. Keep reading to find free Kentucky Derby expert picks.
The favorite for the Kentucky Derby is Tiz the Law, but he will receive strong opposition from Art Collector. The local hero has won the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G2) and the Runhappy Ellis Park Derby in his last two starts and trains locally out of the Trackside Training Center in Kentucky. He would be a very popular winner among Kentucky horseplayers.
He will face tough opposition from favored Tiz the Law, winner of the Belmont Stakes (G1) and Travers Stakes (G1). He has been the favorite for the Kentucky Derby all year.
The West Coast is sending three horses: Honor A. P., Thousand Words, and Authentic. The latter two are trained by five-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Bob Baffert, while 2005 winner John Shirreffs trains Honor A. P.
Woodbine Racetrack in Canada sends unbeaten Shirl's Speight, while King Guillermo comes from Florida. The 2019 Champion Two Year Old, Storm the Court, could round out the superfecta or trifecta with his late rush.
There are several Kentucky Derby longshots this year, including Winning Impression, Belmont Stakes second-place finisher Dr Post, and Attachment Rate. One horse that ran just behind Tiz the Law on August 8 is Caracaro, who is lightly raced with just four races to date, but he has improved lately and ran very well in the Grade 1 Travers. He could surprise and hit the board at a huge price.

Kentucky Oaks Contenders
The Kentucky Oaks is a 1 1/8 mile race for three-year-old fillies worth $1.25 million. It is run on September 4, the day before the Kentucky Derby. There are two top contenders in the race, Gamine and Swiss Skydiver. The Oaks will be a clash of these great titans, who have won three Grade 1 races in the last two and a half months.
Other Kentucky Oaks contenders, such as Bonny South or Speech, will be trying to upset them. Shedaresthedevil, Tonalist's Shape, and Donna Veloce are all prep race winners who will be in the mix of the race. Trainer Brad Cox won the race with Monomoy Girl in 2018 and looks to make it a double with two runners in the 2020 Kentucky Oaks.
Kentucky Oaks Free Picks
- $50 Win: Swiss Skydiver
- $10 Win: Speech
- $5 Kentucky Oaks Trifecta Key: Swiss Skydiver with Speech, Shedaresthedevil, and Gamine
Kentucky Oaks Best Bets
The best bet in the Kentucky Oaks is trying to defeat the top two favorites. Neither Gamine nor Swiss Skydiver will offer much value. Horses like Speech, Bonny South, and Shedaresthedevil will be bigger prices and are very capable in their best days.
Speech is a Grade 1 winner who is not ranked on the same level as Gamine or Swiss Skydiver, and Shedaresthedevil has been working well on the track. Trying to beat the favorites is one of the best Kentucky Oaks handicapping tools.
