Sudden Surprise Looks Like No Surprise in $100,000 New York Stallion Stakes
On Sunday at Aqueduct, the track will host the $100,000 New York Stallion Stakes. Restricted to three-year-olds sired by a stallion that stands in New York, the race will be held at six and a half furlongs on the main track and has drawn a field of six colts and geldings
Sudden Surprise headlines the field as the morning line favorite at odds of 9-5 for trainer Todd Pletcher. A bay son of Giant Surprise, he is a homebred for Repole Stable and has won five of his eight starts. He has gone winless from two starts this year and will be trying to rebound after finishing sixth in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes. He has recorded a bullet workout since that effort and is scheduled to break from the rail under jockey John Velazquez.
Bust Another trying for first stakes win
Second choice at morning line odds of 5-2 is Bust Another for trainer Mario Pino. A bay son of Bustin Stones, he was purchased for $80,000 as a yearling and will be trying to earn his first stakes victory. He is stepping up in class after winning an optional claiming race at Aqueduct and has now won a total of four of his six starts. Eric Cancel will be aboard and they will break from post position two.
Lucky Lurie making stakes debut
Also in the field at morning line odds of 6-1 is Lucky Lurie for trainer Mark Hennig. A bay son of Girolamo, he was purchased for $50,000 as a yearling and has one win from five starts. He is trying to earn his first stakes victory and will be making his stakes debut after a fourth-place finish in an optional claiming race. Junior Alvarado will be in the irons and they will break from post position four.
